Today we focus the safety beams located on your garage door, and how knowing how and when to test them can quickly help you solve your problem.

Garage Door Safety “Eye Misalignment” or Malfunction

For more than twenty years, no garage door installation has been complete without the addition of ‘safety eyes’ sensors. These sensors are located about half of a foot off of the floor and are used to prevent your door from closing when something is in its path. The two sensors generate a beam between one another, and if that beam becomes blocked by an object, the door should stop coming down.

Are Garage Door Sensors Broken?

If your door will not close when using both the wall station and the remote but will close all the way when you forcefully hold down the button until shut, you could be in need of realigning your sensors.

Let’s start with the obvious. Make sure that nothing is blocking the path of the beam, and then check to see that both sensors are in fact working. Each sensor is equipped with a small LED light, and these lights are designed to function when they are perfectly aligned. If you find that one side is lit, but the other is not, try to bend the unlit eye so that it directly lines up with its partner. When this has happened, both lights should glow. In the case that neither light is lit, check to see that they are properly wired and that nothing has been clipped.
