Repair Garage Floors Damaged by Road Salts: Denver Garages

In our last installment we discussed how and why so many garage floors are damaged by road salts. While the mixture of liquid magnesium and calcium chloride are able to make the roads safer for millions of drivers every winter, as the chemicals make their way down into the pores of your concrete floor, they have the power to eventually cause ‘spalling’ and can destroy a garage floor.

Today the Denver garage door installation and repair team at Colorado Overhead Door Company will help you combat this damage both before and after it happens.

Repairing Garage Floors Damaged by Road Salts

To start repairing a garage floor that has been damaged by road salts you will first want to completely clear and clean your garage floor so that you can locate all areas damaged. With your floor now clean, the best tool is going to be some good ole’ fashioned elbow grease, along with a mixture of 1 gallon of water, a cup of vinegar and a splash of dish soap. Pour this solution onto the stained areas and use a stiff deck brush to fully remove all of the salt. Both a mop or a wet-vac can be used to remove the residue, and once removed, you will want to flush the area once again with water to make sure that you have removed all chemicals.

You want to make sure that you use either a mop or a shop-vac to remove all of the water, as the salt will simply settle in another place and eventually restart the process all over again. For this reason, it may be best to apply the water, vinegar and soap solution a few times to assure that your floor is completely rid of all sodium deposits.

If you are not convinced that all of the salts have been removed, there are other store-bought  products on offer that are made to aid in the removal of salts.

Future Prevention of Salt Damage

Now that you are sure that your garage floor is clean, there are a few steps that you can take to prevent future corrosion. Garage floor mats are a great solution, as they absorb all water that fall off of you car. They also are easy to maintain and can also prevent falls in the case of an ice over.

Another smart option for Denver garage owners is to use a polymer modified cement, as it has fewer pores for liquids to fill. Do note, however, that these floors cannot be filled with regular cement, as it will not bond.
